Sweatshops: Always Low Prices

December 25, 2008

Since legislators have proven incapable of rolling back the so-called “free trade” laws that allow American investors  and American consumers to exploit foreign labor markets, I propose we pass a bill requiring all retail merchants to display pictures on their shelves showing who made the products, the conditions in which they were produced, etc. Like this:

I am 6 years old, and I made this product in a sweatshop in Pakistan. I worked 14 hours/day, at the rate of 10 cents an hour. ENJOY YOUR PRODUCT!

Merchants would be required to hire independent, 3rd party contractors to do the appropriate research and post the pictures and captions. Those merchants failing to comply would be fined.

Such a practice would probably make wealthy white liberals feel guilty, and that’s better than nothing.
