Black and White People Furniture?

May 14, 2009

Apparently this is a real commercial. (If you click on it you can find more information on it at YouTube.) Any thoughts about what the hell is going on here or what the social effects might be?

It’s not a real commercial; check out their website, it’s a comedy sketch.
    Still awesome, though. :-)

This is what I posted on Youtube:

A funny video, but I’m a little uncomfortable by the comments about the word “hispanic” said in the video. Us white folks need to be conscious of who we’re joking about. The white dudes at the store had accents just as thick.

And while the video isn’t racist, it also does not really promote some sense of racial reconciliation or understanding. (However, starting the conversation is good.) To promote reconciliation, whites need to learn that our experience is different than that of blacks.

Unfortunately, youtube’s comments have limited space, so my words aren’t too articulate. However, I hope the point gets made that simply talking about race (and how gosh-darn silly it is) does not solve the race issue. If I have a black friend but don’t once talk to him or her about being black (and thus learning how his or her experience in the USA is different from mine), then I’m not doing the work of racial reconciliation. (And reconciliation can’t come until I decide to repent of my whiteness, but that’s another post for another day…)

It would be interesting to read the commercial in context. The Red House is a real store (I checked). I wonder if it has a history of being in a racially contested part of town or something.
