Student Privacy

Here’s something I just found out about student privacy issues, which other American college instructors might want to know about.

If a student signs a FERPA waiver, allowing you to talk to the her parents about her academic record, that does not extend to talking about her medical or disability issues. For you to be able legally to talk to parents about the latter, the student also has to sign a HIPA waiver.
