Driving Complaint

September 24, 2009

driving in Los Angeles = pure awesomeness

driving in New York City = hell

Don’t get me wrong: it’s not the traffic. I can handle traffic. I love traffic. I live for traffic. (Well, that might be a slight overstatement.)

The reason why driving in NYC sucks so bad is that while the freeways and streets are disproportionately complicated, their sign system is disproportionately poor. While the streets in L.A. are moderately complicated, the sign system is actually pretty damn good. In NYC, you can sometimes look but never find signs that denote what the present exit goes to, what exits are coming up, what road you are on, etc. It’s hard to find the Palisades Parkway when the entrance ramp isn’t marked, for instance. And if you take one of those unmarked entrances, you may look in vain for a marker telling you what road you’ve joined.

On top of all this, it seems like every parkway, expressway, or freeway has three different names and two numbers to it, which further complicates the clusterf*@k that is driving in NYC.

Give me L.A. any day.
