Question for the Bible Folks

October 6, 2009

Although I’m not an expert I am qualified to teach introductory undergraduate courses on the Bible. I try to “check in” with the experts from time to time. My question is this: what’s presently the dominant theory on whether the Israelites conquered Canaan, peacefully settled Canaan, or were Canaanites?

I’m primarily New Testament, but the impression I have is that a Canaanite origin for much of Israel is supported by linguistic, archaeological and more recently forensic DNA evidence. That said, it is still possible that a group that escaped slavery in Egypt was part of the story.

It’s a great question and I look forward to reading the answers of those whose primary expertise relates to ancient Israel.

    I think they’d choose #3.

I knew #1 was out, but I wasn’t sure if #3 had become dominant or if it was still “controversial.”
