I Like SMBC, But

October 20, 2009

I like Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal, but pretty frequently the jokes are sexist. Take the one below, for instance, where we learn that violence against women is funny stuff:

Do we learn violence against women is funny stuff? It’s not clear to me; I took the third frame as the two people being shocked or frightened – with the man clutching the woman in fear not striking her – and the fourth frame as the destruction of the earth, not as a fight. Presumably the shock would be a precursor to the end of the earth. Now i’m just confused…

I read the third frame like this: the man is using this distraction as an opportunity to grope the woman …

His hand is not anywhere near her breast in the 2nd frame …

I have the same reading of the third frame as missivesfrommarx. The world is coming to an end, so he might as well grope the woman (because all men are animals that want to constantly grope women?). I believe that is what’s supposed to make it funny.

I was really confused by this one, and was hoping it would show up on Comics I Don’t Understand, but no luck so far.

Picture 1: Two people in a photo booth…
    Picture 2: Something bad happens….
Picture 3: The guy thinks, “it’s the end of the world, might as well cop a feel, amirite????”
    Picture 4: The world explodes.

This really doesn’t seem to be glorifying violence against women; it’s more of a “all men are animals that want to constantly grope women” joke, as AL put it. Either way it’s not very funny…

But doesn’t copping a feel count as violence against women?
