“Hey Doc”

February 1, 2010

Being called “doctor” is flattering; having a doctorate is connected to forms of privilege that are reflected and reinforced every time one is called “Dr. Whatever-your-name-is.”

However, I’m beginning to suspect that some people call you “Doc” because they can’t remember your name.

We do that in Australia with “mate” and, increasingly, “motherfucker”. Some forms of forgetting are more equal than others.

Well, that’s definitely the case if they address you as “Dr. Whatever-your-name-is.” :-)
